Hyperion’s patented technology and compact, modular design can handle huge concentration fluctuations by combining three unit operations in a plug flow structure for nitrogen removal:
1) Adsorption media picks up peak flows of nitrates and some additional anions.
2) A facultative bacteria culture fixed on the surface of the media performs a classic biological denitrification.
3) The system functions as a continuous backwashing filter, refreshing the media while at the same time trapping solids. The constant growth during the regeneration process consumes a small amount of ammonia nitrogen as a polishing step for synthesis of new cultures.
The resulting effluent is a steady < 1mg/L of Nitrate, regardless of variations of influent concentrations.
